EPISODE 51: Change Your Algorithm, Change Your Life

Episode 51: Joel Relampagos

What’s on your list for 2022?

New diet plan?
New workout program?
New self-care regimen?

But let me pose the more practical question here: how do you make it count? How do you make it last?

We have talked about in the past a lot about building habits, starting small and many other tips to approach that change you want to implement for your overall health and wellness. But really, what it takes to make that first move has to be founded on your desire to take care of YOU.

What better way to support you on building on that than to bring on a biggie on changemaking and mental health—Joel Relampagos!

Joel, Change Your Algorithm founder and network TV executive producer, is a fellow API leveraging the power of media entertainment to do good. He’s the executive producer of tons of TV shows, such as the NBC’s hit weight-loss show ‘The Biggest Loser’ and the student debt show ‘Going From Broke’ alongside Ashton Kutcher. He has been a show-runner for multiple production companies such as LeBron James’ ‘SpringHill’ and Dwayne Johnson’s ‘Seven Bucks Productions’. He is also the host of the student mental health show ‘Breaking the Stigma’ released through the education technology company Chegg.

Show notes

Coming out about my True Life: While my motivation for wanting to be a doctor was to save life, when I told my authentic story in front of cameras, I realized there’s more than one way to save a life. Ever since then, I have stayed on television.

7:25

Becoming a mental health champion: Even though I got that title and I try to buy and achieve things, it wasn’t enough. People didn’t know that I was going through my own mental health struggles. I went to rehab where I got to work with therapists and I fell in love with mental health.

8:46

Change your Algorithm: I fell in love with how the mind works. I wanted to come up with a way to recreate my experience, but 100% for free. So it’s is a free mental wellness company, open to anyone and everyone.

Our subconscious manifests things through our bodies. It communicates through dreams, idle thoughts, and manifestation through the body. If we’re experiencing toxic thoughts, we’re going to start to have that physically. That’s what my depression did to me.

We can change our focus. We can change what things mean to us. We can give ourselves a new story, a new perspective. And when we started to focus on that, we’ll start to notice, we’ll start to feel differently. And then our biology changes as well.

15:59

There is a lot of work that can be done and me being a Filipino American executive producer and talking about it isn’t enough. There’s a big responsibility for the people in entertainment now to really demonstrate the diversity of the people in humanity.

17:46

By speaking your own truth and being authentic, that already helps break the cycle versus doing the things that you felt like as a part of the algorithm of your life.

18:21

Media and entertainment is such a powerful belief, a potential agents for change. But there’s also a lot of shows out there that are toxic, and not exactly healthy for our mental health.

20:14

Joel’s Best Medicine: Creativity. It connects me with my inner child. There’s so many positive things that stem from creativity.
