Show notes

Past

Dr. V: “Who was Joseph McClendon, the third as a child? And were there things that didn’t work in your life growing up that allowed you to build up the skills to become somebody that’s just coaching the elite of the world?”

Joseph McClendon III: “I was an okay student, but under duress, and under stress, my father who didn’t finish his education, and had to finish his education as he was raising his family while he was working in the service. As in the Air Force, the biggest thing for him was education. My mother, on the other hand, was an artist, she was an opera singer. And so her thing was his artistry. And so that conflict, trying to, you know, as a child, I find myself I struggled, I was a terrible student, quite honestly.”

Comfort zones

Dr. V: “ That’s beautiful. I think you put it right on the money when you mentioned, having them be aware that that’s the case, because a lot of people are like fish, swimming in water, not recognizing their swimming and water, MBA, being able to actually see the water and say, Oh, I’m swimming in water, can I choose to do something different with that, and that that’s a big aha moment for a lot of people.”

Joseph McClendon III: “ Yeah, my methodology, and that is take them out of the water. Yeah, in oxygen where they can’t, they don’t have water. And then all of a sudden, they realize how important the water is, and how much the water has been affecting their life. I’m a little, I’m not a little, I’m quite a bit unorthodox in the way that I do things. When I was practicing in Los Angeles, I always tell people to listen, if you have a fear of something, we’re gonna face that fear now..”

15:00 - 25:00

Path vs. Outcome

Dr. V: “So you, you definitely hit it again, with our movements actually controlling how we feel. And what I also love, when you just talked about is having the thought and having the awareness that we are in fight or flight because if we can’t see it, every day, people think that a bad text, your boss getting angry at you, somebody cutting you off from the freeway, is actually a saber toothed tiger, and our response and and running away from a saber toothed Tiger is great. And our physiological responses are great if there actually is a real danger. But unfortunately, worse, we’re seeing the world like every single moment is dangerous. And, and over time, that fear and danger response is what causes chronic disease…”

Joseph McClendon III: “If we can back up for a second, first off this, this is a really good point that a lot of people and I love that analogy. The sacred saber toothed Tiger never goes away in our lives, whether it is our cell phones, whether it is the screens that we watch, whether it is the media, or whatever. The saber toothed Tiger is always there, but it’s in the distance. Yeah, we know that it’s there. It’s called low level stress…”

Plans in the midst of a Pandemic

Dr. V: “Before I get to my very last question, people you know, if they’ve listened to this conversation, they’re gonna want to get to know you more. How do they find out more about Joseph McClendon the third “What are they following?”

Joseph McClendon III: “ And it is something that I’ve been doing most of my life My father taught it to me, I just evolved it. And it is a way to make sure that the goals that you set because you can use it anytime you can have goals that you set that you are more likely to do them, versus just set those goals because you know, 80% of the New Year’s resolutions and goals that people said are the same ones he said last year.
