EPISODE 01: How to Keep Your Head On Straight in 2021

Episode 01: Ian Smith, MD

This episode has been a pleasure to make, but first and foremost I would just like to share how this one all came together. So it’s 3am in the morning, it was considerably very early and I was looking for a friend who could join me to make my first episode memorable. I’ve been a fan of Ian’s work for a long time now so I sent him a DM through Instagram and Voila! As straightforward as that, here we are!

Dr. Ian Smith is the host of the “Doctors”. He achieved a lot in the past years and is a very humble guest indeed, just to share his knowledge and experiences in life. He talked a bit about an upcoming book too (very exciting!). But the best part of this episode are the tips and the deep conversion we shared about life and how we can figure things out this year.

Join us in this episode as we provide answers to our biggest “HOW-TOs” this year 2021.

Show notes

00:00 - 05:00

Work and Profession

Doctor V: “ You never really had that growing up. I know I have this, this not enough feeling. But your mindset was, as long as you work hard, you’re going to achieve good things. And I wonder where that got instilled, though?”

Dr. Ian Smith: “ Well, I think you know, first of all, I think that the way you felt, and your journey is very common for immigrants, I think that they find themselves constantly feeling like they’re not part of and that they have to make all these changes. And I can only imagine I’m not an immigrant, but sometimes actually, as a minority, it feels like I’m an immigrant. But so I so, so I don’t have that experience of feeling like I have to belong in that way, or I need to change who I am…”

Health, Fitness and Weight Loss

Doctor V: “ they grow up in an environment of a lot of social media these days, where you can start to really kind of compare yourself to a life that is really constructed to make you look, you know, who knows, if they’re living that kind of life? What do you think the effects of social media are on the mental health of a lot of people today?”

Dr. Ian Smith: “ Yeah, I think this is a very interesting time. I mean, right. And all this stuff is new, I mean, social media in the form that it is now is new. And I think it’d be very interesting to see what long term impact it’s going to have on the generation that is most engaged with, of course, you and I are on social media. But our level of engagement is not the same level of engagement as a 20 y in ear old or an 18 year old or 17 year old.”

15:00 - 25:00

Interests and Hard Work

Dr. Ian Smith: “ You know, when I was I’ve always had multiple interests, always my whole life as a little kid. And I never believed, and I’m glad I never believed that someone should allow themselves to be pigeonholed into just doing one thing…”

Doctor V: “ That’s amazing. It is great for people to hear that level of thinking, belief and mindset. Because, you know, certainly I know a lot of people with a lot of parents that have suggested life should be a certain way.”

25:00 - 33:56

Life changes in the midst of the Pandemic

Doctor V: “ how is your mental state? How are your emotional states? How are you dealing with? With everything that’s going on with the virus? Now? How are you staying healthy and keeping yourself strong? And you have you have, you know, have you dealt with, you know, losing friends and family members of the virus I know I have?

Dr. Ian Smith: “ For all these months, I’ve not been home this much and 15 years consecutively, to be able to stay home, and to sleep in my bed every night, and eat at my table every night with my family. And to be able to work. I have been the most prolific during this period, because it’s allowed me to just focus on the work to get up in the morning to work out, get to the computer and work. I’ve written two books during COVID…”
