EPISODE 106: Habits of the Healthy and Wealthy

Episode 106: Mo Naboulsi

What does it take to be successful and healthy and wealthy?

A genius?
Well, if you look at trailblazers and thought-leaders in different fields, it takes incredible creativity to make a mark.

Passion?
Without passion—wanting something strong enough—we wouldn’t see changemakers in the most difficult fields. It’s the WHY that keeps you going.

Relentlessness?
This and perseverance will get you through the marathon. After all, life is not a race.

So what does it take really? If you ask me, coming from the same principle I advocate in my book, Thrive State, being successful with your health is about making conscious choices—and making those consistently—that put us in an energetic state that feeds into optimal health. In career and life, it’s the discipline built on consistently making conscious choices around things that get you ‘lit’ that would pull you through to success.

If you ask Mo Naboulsi, host of the podcast, Habits of the Few, which talks about the experience, skills, wisdom, and expertise of many remarkable people that come as guests on the show, you’d be surprised by his answer.

He believes in passion. You have to have a big enough reason to see through the long way ahead of you.

But he believes more in the power of resilience, discipline and creating habits. To Mo, discipline is like callouses on your hands. It starts with creating habits and a combination of resilience and habit. You don’t get them right away, but when you do, it hurts a little bit. And over time, they harden and get thicker, and you no longer feel the pain, or you learn to handle it.

We’re both big believers in starting small and simple. But as long as you keep on doing these simple things day by day and try to grow them little by little, it becomes those small pieces making up a big picture when put together.

In my Thrive State episode podcast with Mo, we’re sharing some very simple stuff—keys and tips—for your health and life in general that you start doing NOW. Catch this special episode with Mo Naboulsi, only here at the Thrive State Podcast!

Cultivating Discipline

  • Discipline is like callouses on your hands. It starts with creating habits. It’s a combination of resilience and habit. You don’t get them right away, but when you do, it hurts a little bit. But over time, they harden and get thicker, and you no longer feel the pain, or you learn to handle it.
  • You have to have a big enough reason to see through it. If your passion cannot be turned into a business or career, then find something that at least can get you to spark but can get you to stick to it long enough until it becomes ingrained and until it leads you to the next step.

12:35

It’s gonna be hard, it’s gonna be messy, before it’s gonna be wonderful.

  • Comparison is the thief of joy. But comparing yourself to who you are yesterday is totally healthy. You do it to celebrate growth, no matter how small.

14:03

Which is more valuable: Resilience or Passion?

  • We can actually have both. But resilience is like the activation energy that you use to build your muscle. Whereas, passion is instantaneous. If you don’t have resilience, you cannot go forward.
  • Diamond = Heat + Pressure + Time is the same as Greatness = Stress + Passion + time.

16:21

Simplest/quickest things you can do to cultivate discipline:

  • Start with just one and something simple. Do the hardest things first, so you get it out of the way.
  • Don’t check your phone in the morning. Start with a simple breathing exercise: in for 4, hold for 7, out for 8.

22:53

Changing the Energy around our DNA

  • Physical (sleep, nutrition, movement) and Thoughts (mindset, emotions, community, relationships)
  • 5 Simple Physical Keys:
    • Get rid of sugar and processed foods and eat nutritious food.
    • Restrict the time you eat
    • Move every single day.
    • Practice sleep hygiene.
    • Go to sleep and wake up at the same time every single time. Practice a good nighttime routine.

25:25

The IMPACT Framework to Stay in the Thrive State

  • I (a)M – the bold vision you have for yourself
  • Pause – the breath and space
  • Awareness – being mindful of the action you’re about to make
  • Choose – the conscious choice
  • Take Action
  • Thrive State is about making conscious choices that put us in an energetic state that feeds into optimal health.

30:24

Default Mode Network: The Seat of the Ego

  • We created the ego within ourselves to protect us from danger. It basically forms who we are as people; part of it wants us to survive but it’s an autopilot.
  • When we don’t react and show up differently, there’s a different energy.
