Show notes

3:18

The Science of Longevity vs. The Art of Living: There’s no shortage in the science of longevity but we tend to forget the art of living. But we can do both: extend lifespan and expand life itself.

7:40

Longevity is the result of choosing to live a life happy, healthy, connected and purpose-driven. But we tend to focus on the either-or. But we can marry science with art.

How They Live Long in the Blue Zones:

  • Move Naturally – their environments constantly nudged them into moving without thinking about it
  • Sense of purpose adds at least 7 years
  • Downshift – rituals and practices to deal with stress
  • 80% Rule – Stop eating when you’re 80% full
  • Plant Slant – beans are s the cornerstone of centenarian diet; meat only 4-5times a month
  • Wine at 5 – 1 or 2 glasses of wine a day but not all 14 glasses on a Saturday
  • Belong – 258/263 centenarians belong to a faith-based organization
  • Family first – aging members of the family are kept at home, children are invested with love
  • Right Tribe – they are either born into or they chose social circles that supported their healthy behaviors.

20:00

How did Blue Zones actions led to activating molecular longevity and optimization? Epigenetics – the gene expression has less to do with the gene itself but largely due to the external environment around the cell.

21:26

What our Telomeres say: greater length = greater health, longer lifespan. Stress shortens the telomere.

23:10

CTRA – Conserved Transcriptional Response to Adversity: Activated CTRA increases inflammation and lowers immune. Chronic stress activates CTRA leading to chronic diseases and symptoms. Inhibiting CTRA means dispositional optimism and eudaimonic wellbeing, meditation, yoga, taichi, exercise, noninflammatory diets, cognitive-behavior stress management.

26:55

The Bioenergetic State: Where Science Meets Art. Science of Longevity is the technology and Art of Living is about the choices.

31:29

Forgotten Keys to Natural Longevity: Social – lifting up other people; Physical (sleep, movement, nutrition); Emotions – empowering beliefs and positive emotions especially gratitude; Mental/Thoughts – changing our story; Spiritual – the power to choose.
