EPISODE 42: Rescue Your Health – Best Tests to Upgrade Your Health and Performance

Episode 42: Marvin Singh

Imagine this: Your doctor is like a firefighter and that burning house is like all the health hazards around you. How would you like your doctor to act?

Do you want someone who’ll (just) be there for you when you get yourself hurt with the fire or someone who’d warn you and tell you what you can do to not get yourself in harm’s way?

Well, maybe you don’t have to choose one over the other. Maybe doctors—especially now—are becoming more and more open to combining conventional with innovative but very rooted principles like that of integrative medicine.

When I first entered into medical practice, I thought, yes, I’ll be saving lives.

True. I was able to do that. But something was missing.

I always wondered if there was a way to backtrack—or go back in time—so that people don’t always see me only when something is already terribly wrong with their health.

That’s one of the reasons why I explored and pursued the practice in peak performance—I knew deep within that there’s so much power in prevention and in making the most out of our amazing bodies and innate capability to heal.

And thanks to colleagues in the practice who have been doing amazing work to make this a better option and an option available to everyone, like Dr. Marvin Singh.

Dr. Singh is the founder of Precisione Clinic and one of only a few Integrative Gastroenterologists in the United States. He did his Internal Medicine training at the University of Michigan Hospitals, and completed a Gastroenterology/Hepatology fellowship at Scripps Clinic Torrey Pines. Finding that missing link in his practice, he went on to fulfill a fellowship in Integrative Medicine and was trained by Dr. Andrew Weil at the Andrew Weil Center for Integrative Medicine.

Dr. Singh is currently a Diplomate and Member of the Board of the American Board of Integrative Medicine and, previously served as a faculty member at UCLA and Johns Hopkins University.

He is the author of the brand-new book, Rescue Your Health, and co-edited the textbook of Integrative Gastroenterology, 2nd Edition, and has contributed to many other articles, books and podcasts.

Dr. Singh joins the Thrive State podcast with super-valuable information about ways we can take to rescue our health and upgrade our performance. From his five best tests for precision medicine and designing personalized plans for your health to some very simple practices he himself has done when he had his own challenges.

7:22

Fellowship with Dr. Weil: It really changed my life. I felt like I could see what were some of the missing pieces. I went from being a doctor to being a healer.

11:24

Once you actually start doing it, it gets easier. I didn’t put any pressure on myself to do a hundred things at one time. I said we’re going to make small changes.

13:04

Overcoming plateau: I couldn’t go any further but I felt like there was more that I could do. I started using some other tools out of my integrative toolbox that I was learning like guided meditation, and breathwork.

14:00

Symptoms-diagnosis-prescription algorithm: Personalized medicine is so important. We do not apply the general concepts of thousands of people to you—whether you fit in it exactly or not. We’re actually applying the concepts of you to you.

18:18

Integrative medicine isn’t a field on its own. It’s just good medicine. Don’t think of it as something necessarily separate, just think of it as something better.

19:53

Rescue Your Health hopes to help people understand that precision medicine doesn’t have to be an intangible concept, or only for a particular type of person.

21:22

The Five Way Test: (1) Microbiome Test, (2) Coronary Calcium Scan, (3) Nutritional Genetics, (4) Basic Lab Tests, and (5) Body Composition Scan (amorous scan)

27:33

It’s best to look at the whole microbiome. It is such a complex system, it’s like an ecosystem. A better quality test is to understand what’s going on in the microbiome. and what are the capabilities of these microbes.

32:27

Prevention is so much more powerful because if you can prevent that initial event from even occurring, then your overall well being or health, and your quality of life may be much better.

36:04

Precision medicine is really a game changer in how we define health or what it means to really be healthy.

38:13

Marvin’s best medicine: Believe in yourself, because we have so much power within our minds and bodies that we don’t appreciate as much. Don’t give up on yourself; really understand that the best medicine actually lies within you.
