EPISODE 84: The 5 Mindset Shifts for Beating Burnout & Achieving Peak Performance

Episode 84: Erin Stafford

Burnout is a topic very close to my heart – as many of you might already know, this was ME six years ago.

I was the chief of interventional radiology at my hospital, and I was crushing it. But deep within I am not well, to say the least. I am definitely not my authentic self.

It’s a challenge many people come across – even (rather, especially) the non-stop, high achieving, success-chasing peak performers.

So it’s been like a million dollar question: how do you beat burnout?

Would a big-move career change make the difference?
Would taking off for a year do the trick?
How about a self-care pampering day?

But experts say, burnout, which is usually stress episodes piling up making you a ticking time bomb, requires small but consistent mindset shifts.

Recently, I shared a conversation with a fellow keynote speaker and burnout expert–going through an almost endless list of burnout red flags. But much more exciting to share is her Five Mindset Shifts to beat burnout and help people achieve peak performance (sustainably!)

These 5 Mindset Shift practices and tips came from Erin Strafford–definitely a high achiever herself by being a multi-faceted, marketing jack-of-all-trades for some of the biggest brands in the world.

She’s helping people beat burnout and achieve peak performance! Erin’s done excellent work inspiring people and just a very valuable resource for everyone.

Why Burnout?

It was literally one thing after another in just a span of one year. I was always a mover and a goer. Until I saw the signs that were so unlike me—being insensitive, not caring about anything, apathetic.

I thought burnout was like a BS excuse of weak people, but it happens to anyone.

Burnout Red Flags

Compiled stress manifesting physically, mentally, emotionally, spritually and socially like unnecessary road rage, snapping at people, drinking too much, zoning out, anxiety, immune issues like eczema, rash, etc, depression. The list is endless.

Mindset Shifts Tips

Burnout is something you have to work out every single day—making small, consistent changes, and mindset shifts.

Some Mindset Shift Practices:

  1. Decode your flow. Stop doing everything. Figure out what you really want to do. Do a “love it or leave it” test.
  2. Slow down to speed up. Find the balance of slowing down and speeding up to give your body time to recover and recuperate. Tips: Turn the music off in your car for some time. Practice the Coco Chanel takeoff on your schedule or to-do list.
  3. Release the reigns. Practice letting go of the urge to micromanage and let someone else do it.
  4. Pivot like a pro. Instead of being destination-focused, focused on being able to pivot and move with agility. Signs that you need to pivot: Envying a person or a situation, often making jokes about someone or something.
  5. Take a victory lap. Focus on gratitude, the progress, the small wins. It’s the small little pieces that we deal with every single day that affect us more. If you’re making progress throughout your day, you end up feeling good about yourself. Tips: Create a ‘wins’ folder in your email and file emails that say nice simple things.

How do you start a Mindset Shift off from a Burnout

When you’re feeling flustered or burnout or just not yourself, stop and ask: what is better for my health right now? Take the moment to answer that question. The world is not gonna end if you don’t jump to the next thing on your list right away.
