Episode 59: Steven Harms
You’ve probably heard: Laughter is the best medicine.
There’s truth to that of course. Not only because it fosters positive thoughts and emotion, induces happy hormones, exercises your face muscles and so on.
I’ve written about this in my book, Thrive State, as part of the 7 bioenergetic elements for optimum health and longevity.
But many of us used to overlook one of the most important aspects of laughter: breathing.
Laughter yoga, through laughing, breathing, and movement, have been shown to increase health, and lower inflammation. And of course, as I always say, lower inflammation means higher immunity, less chance of getting chronic diseases.
This week’s episode guest of the Thrive State podcast, Steven Harms, found and developed a way to literally do this all day long.
Sounds crazy? Laughing, smiling all day long, while speaking, while singing?
Call it one but doing so can help you live longer simply because it trains you to be intentional about how you breathe.
Being a total mess on voice, speech, rhythm and coordination, everybody thought: this guy will never sing despite desperately wanting to. But all his perseverance and support from people who believed paid off.
Steven Harms, who’s now a professional opera singer and CEO of V.O.I.C.E., is with us in this really enlightening episode to teach us a few techniques on breathing and speaking to enhance health and longevity.

The body keeps you alive by making sure that you take another breath. We just don’t know as the human race that we can be intentional about what that breath looks like. But now that we know that we can literally train ourselves to breathe a specific way, we can take command of giving ourselves a better shot.
