3 unexpected disadvantages of dating a doctor
There are multiple advantages of dating a doctor. However, ensure you know what you are getting yourself into! It’s worth noting that when you date a doctor, you are often forced to adapt to certain characteristics.
Some of the benefits of dating a doctor include free trips to any exotic locations for the many conventions, an endless supply of ah sticks and band-aids and free medical advice.
However, be forewarned with the following 3 things to expect if you are about to date an MD:
1) We are always running late
Managing a hectic and demanding celebrity schedule isn’t as simple and easy as it may seem, neither is managing is my profession. Nearly all the time I’m running late. Whenever I have more than 10 “dates” (patient appointments) scheduled for the day, all this will be inevitable. Regardless of how great my intentions may be, I’ll most likely get out of work later planned. It takes a lot of skills to control and manage my schedule and even to communicate in advance on how crazy can probably be.
2) We always keep checking our phone at least 10 times during movie, dinner, when meeting our parents, etc.
Just like dating any other sort after-professional, dating any doctor requires some level of fitness to avoid chances of your date getting mad and walking out on you. As a doctor, how can you check your phone while your date is in front of you? It’s a rough time, and it sucks. I’m approximately on call 24/7. This means that my phone is mostly a part of my date as much as I am. I swear that I don’t check Bumble, Instagram or Snapchat but my job just never ends.
3) We may have horrible table manners since we are freaking hungry!
Being “on” always, even if your audience is composed of screaming patients or screaming fans, requires a very high level of prep, pressure, and training. It’s quite easy for any doctor to forget about taking care of themselves. I skip lunch more often than I may want to. So don’t judge me in case I inhale a plate of Mole Abuelita Enchiladas (Elated) at the Cafe Gratitude or if I may not remember to compliment you on how beautiful you may be looking while I eat a sashimi platter. Sorry, I’m just hungry!
So why even date? Well, we all want what every Nicholas Sparks novel/film couple has. This is because companionship matters.
Besides, love is a good medicine. Connecting with others triggers the release of oxytocin. Medically speaking Oxytocin helps you lower your cortisol levels which reduce mild GI inflammation, reduce blood pressure and makes you feel just fantastic.
We can decide to date even if our careers are demanding and crazy. However, we have the capability of taking control of our health. Remember that you are your own medicine. Recognize your positive connections and relationships because they play a big role in a balanced and healthy lifestyle.
I’m a doctor, trust me!
To your health (and more love life)!
