Dealing with Suicide and Depression

opular Youtuber Logan Paul was again at the center of controversy after posting a video on his Youtube channel of a student who had committed suicide in Japan. The video had gained millions of views before Logan Paul removed it after a lot of criticism. This incident caused a lot of uproar on the internet with many people calling for removal from YouTube. YouTube acted swiftly and demonetized his videos over saying that the video violated some of the company’s terms and conditions and was not “brand friendly.”

This event reignited the normally stigmatized topic of suicide. Suicide statistics show that this is no longer a distant problem but it could happen to any one of us or any of our loved ones. Data shows that more than 42,000 people die as a result of suicide annually. A further 1 million attempt suicide while 9 million others think of suicide. These numbers are astonishing and shows how much of a problem that suicide has become. There are things that you can look out for to know if someone is suffering from depression or if they are having suicidal thoughts.

3. Excessive alcohol consumption and drug abuse – this is mostly an attempt to numb pain or to garner courage to commit suicide.
4. Reckless behavior – reckless behavior can range from missing work or school or doing risky behaviors that the person did not engage in before.
The signs of depression can be summed as SIG E CAPS.

If you or someone you know someone who is exhibiting suicidal tendencies, talk to a professional counselor by dialing 800-273-TALK (800-273-8255) which is the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. If somebody is threatening to take their lives, do not live them on their own for preventive measures. Call 911 as soon as possible and if possible take the person to an emergency room nearby.
